A critical assessment of the address exposed President Tinubu for who he is, as he intellectually maneuvered the nation away from its main challenges.
President Tinubu merely gave kudos to military officers without offering the nation an honest update on the war against insecurity—a menace frustrating the length and breadth of the country, ranging from kidnapping and banditry to political thuggery and related issues.
However, President Tinubu was bold enough to acknowledge the challenges facing his administration as the fallout from his economic policies continues to mount, causing runaway inflation and economic adversity for citizens. Reaffirming his characteristic boldness, the President acknowledged that his economic policies came with serious drawbacks, but maintained that his administration’s decisions remain sacrosanct for the future of the nation. It is a situation he sarcastically likened to a cancer patient faced with the choice of taking short-term medication with long-term pain, or short-term pain with long-term healing.
Nigerians would have expected much more from Mr. President regarding the pump price of fuel, which has jumped past ₦1,400 per liter. Instead, President Tinubu let sleeping dogs lie, opting to defend the removal of the oil subsidy and highlighting the benefits it has brought to all tiers of government—including the federal, state, and local governments, which he claimed would have collapsed without the subsidy removal.
President Tinubu devoted a significant portion of his 66th Independence Day speech to the government’s drive toward boosting agricultural output in the country. This indirectly seemed to acknowledge that ordinary Nigerians are facing severe hunger, highlighting the urgent need to address this food crisis and make food affordable regardless of a citizen’s income class.
Furthermore, when President Tinubu spoke about the federal government's programs in the health sector, one could only question their real-world impact, given how severely citizens struggle to access public healthcare facilities across the nation.
While some argue that President Tinubu's speech fell short of expectations regarding concrete solutions moving forward, it clearly demonstrated that the man at the helm of affairs is not interested in cheap talk. He appears ready to take full responsibility and acknowledge every setback resulting from his reforms, remaining focused on achieving his ultimate goal of restructuring the Nigerian economy.
However, if there is one glaring oversight in President Tinubu's speech, it was his failure to pay tribute to those who actually fought for the country's independence.
President Tinubu's 66th National Independence Day address gave virtually no acknowledgment to the founding fathers who laid the foundation for the freedom celebrated yesterday. Throughout the entire 21-minute address, no credit was given to Sir Ahmadu Bello, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Anthony Enahoro, or any of the other great men and women who put their lives on the line for Nigeria to gain its independence on October 1st, 1960.
